Some sports, like wrestling, actually require that athletes stay within a certain weight range. Others, like figure skating and dancing, press the idea that only thin, lithe bodies look good enough to be on the stage and ice. Parents and coaches can make young athletes even more prone to eating disorders by pushing them to lose weight in order to perform better.

Being Proactive

Stay in touch with your feelings and what’s going on in your life. Express yourself, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. You can use your self-knowledge to keep from falling into the patterns that lead to a full-blown eating disorder. This can mean finding friends who don’t make a big deal out of food and body size. Writing down your thoughts—in a journal, blog, or any other format-can be helpful. Getting involved with sports, hobbies, or youth groups is also a good idea. Find an adult you trust (family member, doctor, or counselor), and go to them for help when you start feeling out of control. Always remember that you are not alone. There is help available when and if you need it.
